Baseball Player of the Week nominees

Here are the players nominated by local coaches for the Morning Journal’s Player of the Week. The winner will be revealed in this Friday’s Edge.

Amherst head coach Al McConihe nominated Griffin Weir. He picked up a win against Springboro with 5 2/3 innings pitched striking out 4. Weir hit his first varsity home run against Mason.

Columbia head coach Justin Ramsey nominated Zach Bican. He was 6 for 10 with 2 doubles, 6 RBI and 4 runs scored. Bican also had a five inning shutout against Fairview.

Edison head coach Sean Hoover nominated Ryan Reber. He allowed 2 earned runs in 12 1/3 innings pitched. In doubleheader against Willard, he threw a complete game 4-hit shutout in his team’s 2-0 win. In the second game of the doubleheader, he came into a 6-4 game with the bases loaded and no one out in the 7th inning and was able to record the last three outs for the save.

Elyria head coach Mike Brandyberry nominated three Pioneers. Sophomore second baseman Mike Izzarelli went 8 for 13 with three steals. Senior pitcher Jordan McDonald threw a 1-hitter on Opening Day against Avon Lake. Senior Jake Neuschaefer was 8 for 12 with 4 walks and 9 RBI. He had 2 doubles, 2 triples and 4 stolen bases.

Huron head coach Dustin Kastor nominated senior Brandon Johnson. He was 8 of 13 with 2 doubles, a triple. He scored 5 of the team’s 7 runs and had 5 stolen bases. Kastor’s on base percentage was.667 with a slugging percentage of .923. He also had a ERA of 3.00 on the mound.

Norwalk head coach Wes Douglas nominated junior Nate Light. He was 5 for 8 with 2 doubles and 4 RBI in his first ever varsity starts in a doubleheader against Lexington.

St. Mary head coach Ben Stover nominated senior Trett Andews. He went 3 for 8 at the plate with a double. He struck out 8 in relief to pick up the win against Calvert and had two outfield assists against St. Paul.

Sandusky head coach Matt Martin nominated junior Xavier Turner. He was 9 for 12 with 8 runs scored from the leadoff spot. He had 3 doubles and a triple driving in 3. Turner also picked up a win in relief.
